Early Life and Skiwear Design: Annette Dale, a woman of boundless creativity and a deep love for the outdoors, was born and raised in Orange County, California. With a degree in Public Health & Nutrition, she pivoted and went to fashion design school at 25. She has been sewing since she was 6, following a craft the women in her bloodline had practiced for many generations. As a skiwear designer, she quickly grew a division from $8M to $28 M in 2 years. Annette's designs were known not only for their style but also for their exceptional functionality, ensuring warmth and comfort even in the most frigid conditions. She made her retailer stores shine.

The Fateful Diagnosis: Annette's life took a dramatic turn when a brain tumor left her with a paralyzed face, vocal cord and tongue. It was a life-altering moment that threatened to shatter her dreams of become a top athletic wear designer. The prognosis from medical professionals was disheartening, offering little hope of a full recovery. However, Annette was determined to defy the odds and refused to let her circumstances define her.

The Path to Healing: In her quest for recovery, Annette discovered the transformative power of yoga and meditation. These practices done daily, with their gentle movements and mindfulness techniques, became her sanctuary during a time of profound physical and emotional challenges. Through unwavering dedication, Annette gradually regained facial movement and nerve regeneration, defying the expectations set by the medical community.

Chaffins later became Ancient Language, honoring the ancient Sanskrit where yoga developed.

SUCCESS WITH INVISIBLE DISABILITY

Thirty-six million women in America live with a disability. I am one of them.

At 30, I was a corporate athletic wear designer flying high — until a brain tumor stopped me cold. What followed changed everything: paralysis, nerve damage, a long road back, and a permanent invisible disability that is still part of my daily life.

What do you do when your vitality is pulled out from under you at the peak of your career? I did the only thing I knew how — I designed my way forward.

I rescued my career by creating something the world didn't yet have: a yoga apparel line. In 1993 yoga was barely a household word in the Western world. The idea was novel. So was the determination behind it.

More than 30 years later I am still here — running a thriving business, conquering fears, and managing symptoms the common eye cannot see. It takes creativity, self-acceptance, and the humility to ask for help. It takes learning to navigate your inner dialogue as fiercely as your outer presence in the world.

Yoga gave me my life back. Ancient Language is how I give that back to you.

I'VE BEEN A BUYER

I have been my customer. I have travelled to yoga retreats, done deep diving at retreats and attended a lot of Yoga Journal conferences studying with the top yoga teachers in the world. I have been a vendor with Yoga Journal and The Yoga Show to have direct experience with my ideal customer and talk to them about my product offering and what they want. I know the comfort and fit that I want when I am practicing yoga. I need clothing that needs no adjusting, that fits great so I can focus on my breathe and alignment. I watch what people are wearing and see them more graceful with how I would dress them. I see them younger than they see themselves. There is no reason for frumpy and dowdy. You can be hip and comfy at any age.

I was part of a writing group called Literati Academy during Covid and beyond. I felt like my story was inside me, but I had not written about my medical challenges and healing journey.
